About the Artists

Currently, Krystal Ramirez is finishing her last year at California State University, Long Beach pursing a Bachelor of Fine Arts with the emphasis in metal and jewelry. She is majoring in 3D Media and is earning her Bachelors in Fine Arts. Krystal was from Huntington Beach and now lives in Long Beach for school. Ever since she was little, art has always been an interests of hers.

Formal Analysis

Within Krystal’s artwork, she utilizes different types of metals, such as pewter, copper, brass, steel, silver, and many more, to create pieces of art that represent a large dinner table filled with different types of plates and utensils. Tools such as forks, scissors, cups, and so on were on plates in replacements of the food. Each tool complimented each other on the plate and nothing seems unusual or out of place.

Content Analysis

Krystal’s work serves as an exploration of the relationships that formed around the dinner table. She stated that her art pieces are a directly reflection of the people that have influenced her. Ever since she was young, Krystal always admired the ritual of meal preparation. Dinner time was a way for everyone to get together and share their stories, laughs, cries. Ramirez often feels nostalgic as she thinks back to the truths and stories that were told at the dinner table. It’s almost like it is a safety place anyone in her family to look forward to coming home to.

Synthesis / My Experience

I really enjoyed the exhibit because I can relate to what Krystal was trying to express through her exhibit and artworks. Dinner is something I also do look forward to having with my family as well. Being a busy college student, I rarely get to sit down with everyone in the family to have dinner and talk about what had been going on in my life and their’s. It is quite unfortunate with my busy schedule, so it is something I value having every time I am able to get the chance to.

Wk 12 – Artist Conversation – Travis Lober

Artist: Travis Lober
Exhibition: WORK : It’s a four lettered word
Media: Printmaking, Wood
Gallery: CSULB School of Art, Merlino Gallery

About the Artists

Travis is currently a senior at CSULB. He is currently trying to get his Bachelors in Fine Arts. Originally from NorCal Travis moved over to SoCal once he got accepted into CSULB. Originally he was majoring in graphic design but later on he switched his main focus to print making and he hopes to have a future career in it once he graduates.

Formal Analysis

Travis mentioned that this exhibit took him a span of three years to create. He said that there is a lot of details that he had to look over. Before Travis became the artist that he his today, he was a construction worker. Due to his years in construction, Travis has had to put up many dry walls. He finds them blank and boring and thinks they should be decorated. Sometimes he would want to work in a blank space though, so he has no perception of colors from anything that can distract him or influence his work.

Content Analysis

Many of his art includes images of shoes. Shoes are used daily in the trades. The same goes for tools. While working in construction, he began looking at tools in a new light. To him, tools can do more than just fixing houses or building one. They are also his inspiration in his printmaking, and they remind him of different senses. He stated that being an artist is similar to being a construction worker because of how precise and careful you have to be.

Synthesis / My Experience

I enjoyed this week’s gallery by Travis. He incorporated what he was passionate about and expressed himself with the art. It was interesting to know that he started off as a construction worker who is now creating art that that was inspired by his past. Although  I haven’t had a job yet, I feel like if I did I could apply what I learned from that job into my overall life like Travis did.

Wk 10 – Artist Conversation – Clare Samani

Artist: Clare Samani
Exhibition: Dressed
Media: paper, ink, clothes, and print
Gallery: CSULB School of Art Merlino Gallery
Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/clares_printing/

About the Artists

Initially, Clare lived in the San Fernando Valley, but she moved to Long Beach to attend school. Currently, Clare is attending California State University, Long Beach’s School of Arts with the emphasis on printmaking. Ever since she was just a child, she loved to draw and paint. She stated that she loves to do those activities because it does not require any sense of direction and you can freely do what you want. As if right now, Clare wants to go graduate school in Louisiana to further study printmaking.

Formal Analysis

Her art pieces, which are printed clothes on a paper, are actual sizes of her clothes. Each piece has one color theme and they range from dull to bright color. The texture is a bit rough, because the garments are pressed and you can see the linings and crumpled markings of them.  Generally, many of her art pieces has a huge contrast from the article of clothing that’s being expressed and the background.

Content Analysis

Clare produces artwork that were influenced by pieces of clothing that she either found, clothing that her friends wear, or clothing interest her that she observes on other people. She thinks that a person’s choice of garments may speak to either that person’s own vision of self or what the person wishes others to view as his or her self. Her work focuses on exploring the symbolism and identity inextricably intertwined with people and clothing.

Synthesis / My Experience

I really enjoyed looking at the different designs and texture the clothing appeared to have. Even though the clothes did not have much detail, she used the ordinary clothes in a way to exemplify themselves as something more. The more I look at them, the more smaller details I notice and enjoy.

About the Artists

David DeSantis is a Senior at California State University. He is currently working on getting his Bachelors or Arts in print making. He currently lives in Westminster but grew up living in the Long Beach area. When David was younger, he had an interest in designing and building motorcycles. But as time passed, David realize how much time building motorcycles was taking up and decided to move on to different things. He then enrolled in school and attended The School of Fine Arts and sought out express himself freely.

Formal Analysis

David used cardboard and paper for his art work. Most all of David’s work consisted of dark colors or dark themes. This probably comes from his strong influence from hard rock and dub step which are his favorite types of music. His work the abstract shapes of forms in order to let the audience make his or her own meaning about the art.

Content Analysis

David’s work is influenced by ideas and concepts driven by fluid abstract expressionism. Most of his art pieces that were displayed in his art gallery were based on titles, beats, rhythms, and lyrics from music. His work often seems abstract and a little chaotic which is a result of the type of music that he listens to to inspire his work. His art can take on many ideas and interpretation which makes it unique.

Synthesis / My Experience

As I looked at his art, I thought that the way he used lines was interesting and really had me amazed at what I saw. After I learned that his inspiration cam e from music, I was astounding on his way of showing what music inspires him to do. Music is important part of life that expresses feeling that can not be said and I think what he shows through his art is an interpretation of that.
